Can’t see the wood for the trees?
The phrase “Can’t see the wood for the trees” sums up perfectly the reaction we get sometimes in the toy shop. So many toys to look at, but which to choose?
I have spent a lot of time this year making sure that the baby and pre school toys which we offer are top notch. Becoming a stockist of Bigjigs has been a key factor in this as I’ve been able to successfully fill a few gaps in my range.
I now have a beautiful range with brightly coloured, well made, value for money toys from birth and beyond.
I am a firm believer in less is more, so rather than showering your baby or pre-schooler with lots of Christmas presents, a well-chosen small selection, will be much more appropriate and will stop them becoming overwhelmed with their own toy box.
Let’s face it, this is the only time you will be able to choose your children’s toys as they will soon let you know what they want as they get older!
I love, love, love the Rubbabu range, currently only available from our Astbury shop, these natural rubber toys are suitable from birth and are tactile, bright coloured and practical.
Choose from vehicles, wheeled animals and sensory balls. Prices are from just £5.99
Our top sellers are our soft bodied dolls, Harry, Jess and Poppy. Super soft, with cute faces and easy Velcro fastenings, these make the perfect first doll from birth and beyond.
The new Follow Me Ball from Galt lets children crawl and chase this battery-operated moving ball which lights up. This has been a real hit in the toy shop. Age guide from around 6 months
We have so much choice for one-year olds and beyond. Stacking and sorting toys are a great way to help develop fine motor skills and push and pull along toys encourage balance and coordination now they are starting to find their feet.
The wooden Farmhouse Sorter has animal shapes to post and play with, and the handy carry handle and removable roof make it a great toy to take out and about.
This is also a really good time to introduce your child to the wonderful world of wooden railway. See my recent BLOG for more information on getting them started on their train journey.
Toys for two to 3-year olds
Your child may be happy sitting with a jigsaw puzzle or starting to create their own play scenes. The Melissa and Doug chunky puzzles are super early puzzles with hand sized pieces which can be played with separately.
Our wooden cutting food and box of biscuits look stunning and are useful additions to a play kitchen.
Plastic isn’t always bad
Although plastic toys get a bad press, (and usually quite rightly in my opinion as there is a lot of overpriced tat out there), here’s a range of plastic toys which won’t harm the planet and are great for your children. Green Toys are made from recycled plastic and the toy and packaging can all be recycled too.
I always advise customers to use the age guides as just that with Green Toys. They are a guide – for instance, the Green Toys submarine is suitable from 6 months, but is a great toy for a 1, 2, 3-year-old and even older – after all, who doesn’t love a bath toy?
I could go on, but hopefully this gives you a flavour of what we do at Cheshire Toy Shop and some inspiration for this Christmas.
Don’t forget we can gift wrap and send toys to anywhere in the UK, so you can send your gifts direct to all the lucky boys and girls you know.
Please don’t hesitate to ask if you’d like any help or advice.
And, if you get the chance, please visit us at the farm. We are open from 10am to 4pm Tuesday to Sunday, late night shopping until 8pm on Thursdays up to Christmas.
